![]() The majority of titles released in webtoon format are created digitally, of which “The Abandoned Empress” suffers from the limitations of this approach. It is a hard balance, but one that is perfectly executed within the pages. Regardless, the story will appeal to fans of psychological comics that play with the character's emotions through themes of romance. At the same time, there is more to the story than just adult focused drama as the first volume takes some fantastical turns that are best left unspoiled. It is not an unfamiliar story, but Ina & Yuna bring it to life with an intensity that makes it a challenging work to approach for a younger audience – themes of sexual assault being a big reason to not assume it is a general audience title in spite of the welcoming cover art. The inherent drama that comes with kingdoms conspiring against each other, sets the backdrop for a personal tragedy as a young woman is stripped of her dignity and used as a plaything by a despicable prince. However, the story itself goes into mature territory, addressing themes of inequality, violence and manipulation, all set in the Victorian era. On one hand, the visuals are overly bright, saturated in pastels and colors traditionally used in romance or fantasy titles to appeal to a cute, female focused aesthetic. “ The Abandoned Empress” is one of those series that perfectly balances contradictions with an upbeat visual tone masking the dark story within. ![]() And lots of people like it, I just feel like it will lose value in the long run. I hope I am wrong but that is just wishful thinking :( Seems that now instead of being mistakenly fated, the prince just works hard to get to know her and have her fall in love with him. Just once, I would hope for the story to differ from it's original premise and have a completely different ending. Maybe when the heroine shows up, she will curse both of them or fall into a depression where the prince will be the only one to snap her out of it declaring his love to her and her alone. Why not right? Plus, I feel like she doesn't hate him anymore and totally forgot about her revenge/ curse the hell out of him. After everything he's done, she'll end up with him. The last bit is me just saying it out right now, dear Aristia will most probably fall in love with the prince she is trying to so desperately trying to run away from. Can you blame the guy for always being compared to her on everything for years.) But then, the new girl from the modern world shows up, the oracles then say she was actually meant to be your bride and empress blah blah blah, and suddenly poof! he doesn't hate the prophecy, he loves it. And the perfect promise child prophecy he kept hearing (to be honest, that would be the only part I would actually feel sorry for him. That and his failing in keeping a promise to her mother to protect her. That he would rather torture her, rape her, destroy her and kill her instead of admitting his love for her because of certain circumstances. I could only imagine the same love/obsession but shown as deep hate in her previous life that prince had with her. Who could have seen this coming? And that he was already in love with this girl, long before the series started. Unlike Doctor Elise, Aristia has severe PTSD where the bare mention of her fiance the prince makes her go into a state of complete shock and comatose state at times.īut I feel that now after almost 90 chapters, she has become the prince great obsession. She even swears revenge against her torturer love. Doing everything in her power, mustering every ounce of strength to distance herself from her fated sad, lonely and deadly cage. Aristia actually had a chance, and she is taking it. So I liked the idea of this manwha, it reminded me of Doctor Elise where instead of this being a novel isekai a female modern world girl reincarnates in, this girl gets a second chance to change her destiny, her fate and that of her family with a do-over. I had to confirm my thoughts on it, thinking maybe, just maybe I was being to harsh. Maybe lower as it progresses in S3 or towards the end.
